We partnered with ESPN for their 2018 MLB Rebrand.

Through the knolling concept, we created a collective of the colorful team elements, baseball equipment, and memorabilia to construct environments that feel both nostalgic yet modern, intricate yet playful, and colorful yet gritty.

It’s a fun approach to the graphics and an exciting design language with a lot of potential for future growth. The versatility and complementary nature of the 2D ad 3D elements also provide the agility necessary to service ESPN’s multitude of production needs throughout the season.

Textures played a big part in this process: wood, grass, brick, concrete and leather can be found peppered throughout the piece, providing hints of the ballpark experience. Likewise, the lighting mimics a day at the park, changing throughout the broadcast toward longer shadows and warmer tones at the end, just like the final innings of an evening game in late summer.

For the teams themselves, we developed a series of posters that gave the production & design team at ESPN a limitless palette of fresh, team-based assets to keep the broadcast up-to-date and colorful. The posters are also a key player in the studio shows, peppering the sets with stylized imagery celebrating the culture of baseball. Additionally, we created highly-detailed logos rendered in wool, wood, metal and leather to hint at the artisan craftsmanship that goes into a hand-stitched glove, embroidered uniform or machined bat.
